Nicholas Twit is almost 11, an only child living in Melbourne, Australia today. He saw Basil Rathbone in a film version of The Hound of the Baskervilles and became a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes. Nick’s bedroom is a replica of the sitting-room at 221B Baker Street. Wow!The retired couple next door, Mr and Mrs Basket, are hopeless with computers. Nick’s a genius with technology. He helps the old folk create their church newsletter and send emails to family and friends. They ask him about his future plans. Nicholas wants to become a detective like Mr Holmes. So the neighbours start an agency called Basket Case Investigations with Nick as their detective. He thinks he’ll solve mysteries involving fraud, espionage and even murder. The Baskets were thinking more along the lines of lost cats and overturned bins.On his first case, Nicholas is kidnapped and, in escaping, has a strange encounter with a girl, Felicity, 13. She's furious but reluctantly the pair, Nick ‘n Flick, become a team a la Holmes and Watson. When Nicholas has a new case, he sends Felicity a text message with one word—Goose. That’s short for 'I am the fat goose' which is an anagram of 'The game is afoot' and that's Sherlock Holmes-speak for 'We have a new case, Watson'.Nicholas has his own words called Twit Speak like prif, schabooly and schmickeldickle. As well as the mysteries, each book has new words, word games and puzzles, illustrations and Sherlockian snippets. In Book 1 Young Nick uses the detection methods of Sherlock Holmes to expose a scam and catch a very clever cat burglar. Later in Book 1 the young sleuths solve mysteries with a little help from a friendly policewoman, Detective Sergeant Les Trade. A simple observation turns into a tale involving illegal immigrants, blackmail and lazy dog-owners.
